The Artist remembers, as a child, scrounging a trip, from a local fisherman, round the harbour, Dar es Salaam.
Born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. The artist spent his early years in the rugged out back of East and Central Africa. This enterprising son of a British Engineer displayed an early talent, by making water colours of African birds, selling them to neighbours, to make pocket money.
Leaving home at an early age. He lived with the family of his best friend; people of Eurasian origin. The father supported his family by prospecting. This led to some interesting adventures.
The Artist started his 'working' life with Engineering Companies, in Africa.
During the rainy season behind the drafting board; assisting with field trips to remote areas, in the dry season. His understanding for the back country was useful.
He spent five years in London England, employed as a draftsperson and technical designer. Working for Architectural and Engineering companies. Immigrating to Canada in 1975, where he felt a kinship with the Canadian West.
A technical background instilled an intense preoccupation with detail, scale and definition, explaining why his work is so exacting.
Time spent with guide and outfitting companies, coupled with a seven year residency on an Alberta horse ranch, has contributed to his insight on the workings of the Western life style.
