The mule is a hybrid of the ass and the horse. These Hardy beasts are less prone to disease than the horse and will survive on a more meager diet. In the heyday of the draft animal, the mule was much valued. They are spoken of with varying degrees of affection. Some regard them as cantankerous and ill natured, some say they are more intelligent than the horse and not inclined to tolerate mistreatment. The animals depicted in this image are Belgian Mules.
